Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Ranked No.1 College in India by India Today Ranking observed World AIDS Day. The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Community by Community”. The event was organized by the PG Department of Zoology in collaboration with Department of Student Welfare and Red Ribbon Club. Communities are a unique force behind the success of the HIV response of the 37.9 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018. Thousands of community health workers and members of the HIV and key population networks- many of whom are living with HIV or affected by the epidemic- contributed to this success. On this year’s World AIDS Day, WHO is highlighting the difference these communities are making to end the HIV epidemic while drawing global attention to the need for their broader engagement in strengthening primary health care. In order to create awareness among students about the AIDS, its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, precautions and treatment etc., a poster making competition was held in which all the students participated with full zeal and enthusiasm. Mrs. Sadhna Tandon, Head, PG Department of Zoology interacted with the students and clarified their queries and removed their myths regarding this disease. Dr Madhumeet, Dean, Student Welfare informed the students about the screening methods and treatment centres (e.g. ART Centre in Civil Hospital, Jalandhar) and also advised them to spread awareness. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi appreciated the efforts of the students & faculty members for organizing such social awareness events. She averred that KMV always organize various health awareness activities for the students in the form of health camps organized at campus, expert talks from renowned doctors of the city, free medical check-up camp for the students, blood donation camps, counseling sessions for the students & yoga camps etc.
