Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Ranked No.1 in India by India Today Ranking of Biotechnology, Government of India during the Annual Mentoring Meeting under Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Human Resource and Development Star Status. It is important to mention that KMV is the only women college in the Punjab to receive the coveted status of Star College status from Government of India. During this meeting, summary progress report of Department of Sciences for the session 2019- 2020 was presented in which details of various activities organised by department of sciences like Anubhooti- Student-student mentoring, World Vision 2050 through Sciences, Science Day celebrations, Faculty development program etc. were given to the experts. In addition to regular studies, information regarding various education trips like Gujarat Borosil Ltd., Barauch, Gujarat, CSIR, Mohali, CSIR- Institute of Himalayan Bioresource, Palampur, CIPET, Amritsar etc. arranged by the department was also shared with the experts. This initiative was lauded by all the worthy mentors who said that “Field visits to institutes of national repute and giving practical exposure of work to under graduate students is worth appreciations”. Furthermore, various invited talks by eminent scientists organised to create awareness about modern techniques and to provide information about new dimensions of development were also shared. Dr. Pratap Kumar Pati, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Dr. Dinesh Goyal, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Dr. Vickramjit Singh, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, Dr. Ashish Kumar, DST INSPIRE faculty of Inter University Accelerator Center, New Delhi and many more were invited for guest lectures, expert talks and workshops during the session 2019-2020. Among several initiatives, establishing Innovation hub in the institute is worth mentioning here. Innovation hub is an independent place of learning, recreation, imagination and thinking. DBT Mentors also praised this initiative and added that other institutes should also follow the path of Department of Sciences, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar. One of the success of the Department of Sciences is that total 124 extended experiments and 70 minor projects and 12 interdisciplinary projects were performed other than curriculum. During the COVID-19 pandemic Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar engaged students in number of fun learning activities like One week Social Awareness Camp on Solar Eclipse from June 15, 2020- June 21, 2020, Chemistry involved in COVID-19 Quiz, Learning by doing – fun with physics, Science of COVID-19 and Vaccines etc. All these activities were appreciated by our worthy mentors. It was also announced that Department of Sciences, Kanya Maha Vidyalayawill also hold an Open Science Dayfor school students so that young minds can also be channelized to think to innovate. Webinar and virtual visit to Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai organised by Department of Sciences was an another highlight among various other activities. Moreover, the department is also planning to organise e-visits to the laboratories of international repute those are otherwise not accessible to students. During the conclusion, all mentors agreed that efforts and initiatives taken by the Department of Sciences of KMV under the umbrella of Department of Biotechnology, MHRD Star Status is worth appreciating and the department is advised to keep excelling. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi congratulated Department of Sciences for this success and averred that KMV is bound to develop entrepreneurial skills among its students and science departments should keep focussing on it. She further maintained that KMV always provide the most suitable ambience to its students so that their scientific aptitude can be developed.
