International Scholars Dr Maria Zlateva & Dr Malavika Shetty from Boston University, USA Enlightened the Participants
Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Seat of Women Empowerment with Top National and State Rankings by India Today Survey of Best Colleges 2020 (various categories) & Outlook Magazine under its international series organised an International Faculty Development Workshop on Building a College Writing Program. The eminent resource persons for this workshop were Dr Maria Zlateva, Director of ESL, Boston University, USA & Dr Malavika Shetty, Lecturer, Linguistics & Writing, Boston University, USA. In her inaugural address, Principal Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi welcomed the esteemed guests to the workshop. She averred that writing is very much essential to every educated person. Writing should be learnt at any stage of life. She emphasised on the fact that through these kinds of workshops we will be able to develop better writing skills. Dr Maria discussed in detail the key concepts in writing pedagogy such as learning outcomes, portfolio and metacognition, evaluation and grading, instructor-student conferences, written corrective feedback. Dr Maria further discussed the various steps in writing process such as critical thinking, reading, drafting, editing & proofreading, avoiding plagiarism of text and images & writing support. She also discussed the concept of plagiarism in academic writing and how to avoid it. Dr Malavika in her address stressed on the fact that it is very important to know who you are writing for i.e. journal, creative writing and academic writing etc. She stressed on the fact that person also learn critical thinking through these kind of programs as reading and writing goes together. Writing is a process as a writer goes through several drafts of her writing. In the conclusion of the workshop, both the resource persons discussed the learning outcomes of writing program as what we want to learn such as reading, expressing oneself, writing & revising & to critically reflect. Principal Prof Dr Atima Sharma Dwivedi lauded the efforts of Dr Madhumeet, Head, PG Department of English & Dr Gopi Sharma, Dean, International Affairs for successfully organising the international faculty development workshop.
