P.G. Department of Botany of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar organized an Expert talk under Curie grant on Process of Innovation Development, Technology Readiness Level(TRL); Commercialization of Lab Technologies and Tech- Transfer at Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar. The primary purpose of the visit was to acquaint students with cutting-edge innovations, prototype development, technology readiness level, commercialization of Lab Technologies and Tech-Transfer and the diverse areas of ICAR. Additionally, the visit aimed to provide guidance on the vast domain of potato research, opening up opportunities for students to explore and learn.
First resource person of the event was Mr. Yogesh Gupta (Asst. Chief technical officer). He gave overview of CPRS and the scientists working in the field of potatoes research and processing. He motivate students to try their hand in entrepreneurship in potato field and importance of value addition in potato products.
During the event, Dr. Arvind Jaiswal, a Food Technologist from CPRS in Jalndhar, served as the second resource person. He gave a presentation on the development of potato products, their patents, and technology transfer for commercialization. Dr. Jaiswal showcased a variety on innovative products made from potatoes and discussed their health benefits, particularly for patients with Celiac disease who require a gluten-free diet.Traditionally, potatoes are consumed as fries or chips, but Dr. Jaiswal’s inventive approach involved developing new products such as potato cookis, anthocyanin-rich potato porridge, potato-ragi and corn cake, potato jalebi, gulab jamun, ice cream, and muffins.
Third resource person for the session was Dr. SuganiDevi(Scientist) CPRS, Jalandhar. She is working on hi-tech potato seed production like Aeroponics, minitubers, soilless culture and seed production under net house.She is a true example of women education, awareness and empowerment.
Fourth resource person for the event was Dr. Ratna Preet Kaur (Scientist) CPRS, Jalandhar. Her field of specialty is Genetics and plant breeding. Her talk focused on development of different varieties of potato through plant breeding, PTC, their cultivation and development. She also discussed about storage of first copy of potato seeds through cryopreservation at CPRI, Shimla. Second copy of potato seed is stored in CPRS, Jalandhar.
At the end a field visit was organised which was coordinated by Dr. Dr. Sugani Devi(Scientist) CPRS, Jalandhar. She shows us the process of aeroponics, hydroponics and tray cultivation.
It was a knowledgeable experience for students as they learn about the latest technologies, best practices, and research findings related to potato farming, processing and marketing. They also understand about the importance of value addition in processing of potatoes. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi appreciated the efforts of faculty of botany department for organising such visits for the holistic development of students.
