Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Seat of Women Empowerment with Top National and State Rankings by India Today Survey of Best Colleges 2020 (various categories) & Outlook Magazine Ranking always work hard to enrich its students in academics as well as in their literary skills. In a new initiative, the PG Department of Physics in association with the Student welfare department organized an event called MAGNUM OPUS. The objective of the competition was to make the student confident and better orators so that they can express their views on any topic. The student coordinators of the event were Haramanpreet Kaur and Navneet Kaur. Various competitions were organised under the event named as Storytelling & writing, Self-composed Poem Recitation and Extempore. Students of different streams had participated in the competitions. For story writing students were given the opening line of the story “Closer and closer it came, it was getting bigger and bigger, soon it filled the sky above” and were asked to write their stories around it. First position was bagged by Anshuman Saluja of M.Sc Physics sem-4 who did magic with her magnificent performance. Her story ‘A Jar of Cookies’ was about a person who was autistic and stuck at the age of 5, who couldn’t cope with the death of his mother and hallucinated about her presence even after her death. The story had great word selection and intelligent use of metaphors. Second position was jointly bagged by Manmeet Kaur of B.com (Hons) Sem-2 (My Worst Nightmare) and Lavleen Saini of M.Sc Physics Sem-2 .Her story ‘Arrival’ was a fantasy story that taught us to be selfless and help the needy people. It taught us that kindness always pays off. Third position was bagged by Nandini Sharma of B.Sc FD Sem-2 who composed her story ‘Vocations in the African forest’. For the poem recitation competition students came up with their self-composed poems and recited them with great fondness.  First position in poem recitation was bagged by Beenu Kumari of B.Sc (NM), her poem ‘Pardesiya Di Zindagi’  was about the life of a person who left his family and country in order to complete the dreams of their families. Second position was bagged by Komal Sharma of B.Sc Medical sem-4, her sweet voice and gestures make her poem ‘ਮੈਂ ਪਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਈਂ ਆ’ extraordinary; jointly with Arti of B.Com Hons Sem -4 (One Sided Love) whereas third position was bagged by Malika Ratti of B.Voc Artificial Intelligence and data Science Sem-4 (The God)  jointly with Shukmanpreet Kaur of B.Com (Hons) Sem-4; who explained the beauty of Punjab in her poem ‘Mera Punjab’. For the third competition named Extempore students were asked to speak on different topics such as Importance of communication skills, How far social media affect our life?,  If you are given the opportunity to be the prime minister of India for one day, what will you do?Artificial intelligence – boon or Bane? How far technology affects jobs?, All that glitters is not gold, A change you would like to bring in India. All the students expressed their views on their chosen topics and judges had a difficult time choosing the winners. First prize was given to Komal Sharma B.Sc Medical Sem-4; spoke on the topic ‘All glitters is not a Gold’, she pointed out that Abroad looks like glitters but discrimination and struggle is not gold. Second prize in Extempore was given to Manveen Kaur of B.Sc Medical Sem -4, who confidently spoke about the topic–’what you will do if you become prime minister for one day’ & third position was bagged by Sandeep Kaur of M.Sc Physics Sem-2, enlightened role of  technologies in Artificial Intelligence.

Through this event participants got a platform to enhance their writing and speaking skills along with their studies, which is very important for today’s young generation. There was a large gathering of Audience from different departments. Madam Principal congratulated the students and said that literature and creativity make the personality of a person more attractive. She also motivated the students to keep on participating in such events. She lauded the efforts of the PG Department of Physics for organising the celebrations and encouraging the students to pursue writing skills.
