Three days National Level Workshop on IPR and IP management for startups

Objective: to provide an exposure related to various IPRs, IP and IPR acts and procedures to fill IPs, especially for startups.
Benefit for learners: Students and faculty members get an insight in to various IPRs and Central Acts that are related to IPRs and IP.

Day: 1
The KMV IPR cell and KMV IIC, in collaboration with CSIR-IMMT (Maitri), organized a three-day national workshop on IPR and IP management for startups from April 10th to April 12th, 2024. Dr. Narinderjit Kaur from KMV introduced Dr. Kapil Arya, a Principal Scientist at CSIR-IPU, New Delhi, who began the session by explaining various aspects of IP and IPR. Dr. Arya discussed trademarks, copyrights, and patents, emphasizing their importance for startups and highlighting trademark selection, advantages, and branding with case studies. He also explained trademark filing, design filing, copyright filing, and infringement. The session provided valuable insights into IP and IPRs, and the KMV IPR cell and KMV IIC thank CSIR-IMMT (Maitri) and Dr. Kapil Arya for their contributions. Around 950 participants from 23 states of India and beyond including Philipines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia participated in the event.
Day 2
The resource person for second day of workshop was Dr. T Pavan Kumar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar. Dr. Kumar began by discussing various aspects of IP and IPR, focusing on patents for inventions. He elaborated on the protection of inventions through patents, using global and national case studies. Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of protecting individual inventions, citing examples of women and their inventions like Remya Jose’s pedal-powered washing machine and Ruth Handler’s Barbie Doll. He also highlighted the efforts required at each stage of bringing a research idea to market, emphasizing the benefits of IPs from a global perspective. Dr. Kumar explained the evolution of IP, including property rights, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets, along with their duration and renewal processes. He introduced geographical indicators (GIs) using Darjeeling Tea as an example. Dr. Kumar stressed the power of innovation and the necessity of focusing on research and innovations that can be patented. He also mentioned the Indian Government’s efforts in promote ng IPs and patents through national level workshops. The session concluded with Dr. Kumar addressing queries from the audience, providing a comprehensive learning experience on IP and IPRs. The KMV IPR cell and KMV IIC expressed their sincere gratitude to CSIR-IMMT (Maitri) and Dr. Kapil Arya for their contributions to the session’s success.
Day 3
Dr. T Pavan Kumar, Senior Scientist at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar, served as the resource person for the third day of the workshop, focusing on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Essence. He defined IPR as legal rights protecting creations of the mind, including inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols used in commerce, granting exclusive rights to creators or owners. Dr. Kumar highlighted the crucial role of IPR in fostering innovation, creativity, and economic growth by providing incentives for investment in new ideas and technologies. He discussed the history of patents, the structure of patent papers, and the drafting process, using a cheeseburger case study. He also addressed the growing importance of IPR in technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals, emphasizing the need for a balance to ensure access to essential goodsand services, especially in developing countries. His comprehensive talk underscores the significance of IPR in various fields.
