Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Ranked No.1 College in India by India Today Ranking Department of Botany organized a lecture cum workshop on the topic “Diversity and Applications of Photoautotrophic Algae and Cyanobacteria”. The resource person for the workshop was Dr A.S. Ahluwalia, Department of Botany, Punjab University, Chandigarh. During the workshop, Dr Ahluwalia gave a presentation in which he introduced the algae as a food and energy for future. He expostulate students about diverse habitats of algae as well as diversity in their thalli. He also discussed classical and modern system of classification of algae. He also explained the significance of algae in different fields such as experimental material, food industry, pharmaceuticals etc. After the presentation, he also conducted a practical session along with his 2 research scholars. He extensively made the students aware about the different cell divisions in algae. Students studied the structures of different algal cells under microscope and preparation of synthetic seeds from sodium alginate beads. Students participated in the workshop with full zeal and enthusiasm and also prepared slides of different algal specimens. After the workshop, question and answer session was also conducted in which all the inquisitive students queries were satisfied by the resource person. Principal Prof.(Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi lauded the efforts of the Botany department for organizing such a fruitful and informative activities. She averred that the present age is the age of science and science can contribute a lot in the nation building only if the science & its various applications are properly utilized by the young generation of our country. She further maintained that in KMV we have state of the art infrastructure especially labs for the students so that students can get a wide exposure during their study.
