Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous)P.G. Department of Botanyin collaboration with the Eco-club and Institution’s Innovation Council organized a three-day educational excursion to Shimla to provide students with practical exposure to Himalayan flora and ecosystem conservation.On Day 1, the group visited the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), where Dr. Alok Nath delivered an insightful session on the institute’s contributions to potato research and its future prospects. Students also explored the Mall Road area, observing native plant species such as conifers, rhododendrons, and medicinal herbs adapted to the region’s temperate climate.The next day featured visits to prominent sites such as Summer Hill, where students studied native Himalayan flora, and the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), where they explored the Viceregal Lodge and its museum. The day concluded with a trek to Jakhu Hill, Shimla’s highest peak, where students observed altitudinal variations in plant diversity and visited the iconic Jakhu Temple. During the last day, students visited the Kufri Adventure Park for recreational activities and the Himalayan National Park, where they gained insights into Himalayan biodiversity and conservation strategies.The excursion provided students with a valuable blend of education and recreation, enhancing their understanding of botanical diversity, ecosystem conservation and cultural heritage.Principal Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi emphasised upon the significance of such excursions in promoting experiential learning. She appreciated the Department of Botany for organizing this student-centric initiative.
